La Gazelle D' Or
Taroudant, Morocco

TAROUDANT,
La Gazelle  D' Or

In 1956 a French Baron, Jean Pellenc, and his American born wife, decided to settle in Taroudant and create a paying guest house for their many relations and friends around the world. They built part of the existing main building and twenty guestrooms in cottages round the lawns and laid out extensive gardens. La Gazelle D'Or officially opened on 1st April 1961. Its seclusion, the agreeable climate and its exotic setting near the Atlas Mountains attracted guests. Baron Pellenc died in 1972 and his widow sold the property in 1974.

In 1981, the current owners saw and bought La Gazelle D'Or, then sadly run down, but still with a very special feeling of a wonderful country home. Since then they have reinstated the magic and luxury of the hotel. All the original buildings have been refurbished and redecorated over the years. There are now thirty rooms in stone cottages burgeoning with climbing bougainvillea and lemon trees.

Each room, designed and decorated in a delightful blend of traditional Moroccan and contemporary European style, has its own bathroom, telephone, minibar, open fireplace and private terrace. The mature original gardens were not only maintained but also extended.

There are two tennis courts, a 24 meter pool, horse riding, croquet, hammam, massage, and aromatherapy treatments. Trips into the town of Taroudant with its colorful and extensive souks can be organized as well as excursions into the snow capped Atlas Mountains.

The food is superb; lunch is usually taken by the side of the pool and is a vast, colorful buffet of salads, fish and freshly cooked meat. Much of the produce comes from the hotel's own local organic farm. Dinner is a seven-course affair when guests have the choice of sitting in the more formal dining room, decorated with Berber motifs or sitting on the cool terrace. There is a choice of Moroccan and international cuisine for which the hotel has gained its world-famous reputation.

La Gazelle D'Or does not attempt to present an image or make a statement. The aim is passively to provide guests with the quiet comfort and discreet service, which will enable them to relax and draw from the surroundings and to restore the senses that modern life, tends to crush.
